Research Triangle Park, NC
ST. LOUIS, MO - Living with AIDS (LWA), a newly formed not for profit organization dedicated to improving the lives of HIV infected people, is announcing a program to promote the cutting edge HIV training product developed by TheraSim called TheraSim CS. Steve Hungerford, the Co-Director of LWA stated the goal of this move,
"An increasing amount of scientific evidence shows that the more experience an HIV patient's physician has, the better clinical outcomes they can expect. By helping heath care professionals increase their skill and experience, we can positively touch the lives of more HIV infected people".
LWA and TheraSim,
share a common vision that education can have a tremendous impact on the HIV problem. Any resources dedicated to treatment and infrastructure need a corresponding commitment to educating the health care professionals that will distribute that aid. Al Phillips, who shares the LWA leadership responsibility continued to comment;
"HIV is the most complex disease to treat but the current educational tools we researched were very primitive. The TheraSim product uses advanced simulation combined with artificial intelligence to create a simulated clinical care environment for health care professionals to practice in. Simulation is the gold standard for advanced training in the military, engineering, flight school and clinical trauma care. TheraSim CS has brought this level of training technology to the area of HIV treatment."
According to NIH statistics, as of the end of 2002, 42 million people worldwide were infected with HIV, which is about 14,000 infections a day, 2000 of which were children. In 2002 alone, there were 3.1 millions deaths due to HIV, 610,000 of which, were children. In the US, the rate of new infection is actually increasing.
David D. Hadden, President/CEO of TheraSim,
is a pioneer and inventor on several patents for medical decision support systems and training systems. He has developed the answer to this growing problem of the preparation of health care professionals for the treatment of HIV and other diseases. TheraSim HIV, ready for shipment this March, helps health care professionals and students hone the skills and knowledge needed for the effective and proper use of the complex drug and diagnostic arsenal used to treat HIV patients. TheraSim CS covers all aspects of a patient encounter from managing viral resistance, complex drug interactions and toxicities, adherence, opportunistic infections and resistance. The identification and treatment of HIV co-morbid conditions is also covered in this break through technology.
Hadden stated his commitment to this effort, "There is an impressive and complicated arsenal of drugs and diagnostics for treating the millions of people in the US and the world with HIV. The effort to eradicate HIV has resulted in incredible medical breakthroughs. We have more political will and monetary resources than ever before but while we have the means and the money, there is a tremendous shortage of trained clinical professionals to effectively deliver the treatments. TheraSim HIV is a way to rapid prepare a highly trained cadre of HIV clinical professionals worldwide. Education is the essential first step to any successful plan to deliver treatment."
The treatment of HIV using combinational chemotherapeutic regimens is extremely complex. This is why the HIV Simulator is in such urgent need in the medical community today. Physicians worldwide are faced with the daunting task of keeping up with the many rapid advancements in HIV treatment. Helping in the rapid adoption of new knowledge in HIV is where TheraSim CS can make a dramatic effect. Not just for the treating physician but for the HIV patient's quality of life.
LWA was founded in June 2003 and is comprised of seven board members. LWA's mission is to make health care professionals more knowledgeable about the complexity of the disease through education and awareness by providing funding and support for education, research, and awareness to the HIV/AIDS community, with the intent of improving the quality of life of those individuals coping and living with HIV/AIDS. Through donations, LWA will be making licenses for the simulator available to health care professionals in the US and worldwide.
