| TheraSim, Inc., a Durham, NC-based software company dedicated to improving the quality of clinical care, exhibited at the annual HIV/AIDS conference sponsored by the Phidisa and the National Institutes of Health, demonstrating its simulation-based training to clinicians in the South African military treating patients with HIV/AIDS. The conference is important in the fight against AIDS in the military as the prevalence tends to be higher than the general population in some countries and national and regional security depends upon a healthy standing army.
Phidisa is an HIV clinical research project within the South African National Defence Force (SANDF), in collaboration with the US Department of Defense (DOD), and NIAID. The project is delivering HIV medicines to more than 2,000 people living with HIV, and seeks to treat over 5,000 people within the next few years.
Military representatives from eight sub-Saharan African countries attended the conference which was primarily organized to share best practices and strategize for improved collaboration across South Africa and the Region.
Overall response from physicians and military representatives from Phidisa and other organizations and countries was positive with requests for pursuing pilot projects in Uganda and Namibia.
